Veliko Tarnova is home to a fortress built in the 7th century. It overlooks the city and has incredible views. The city was originally founded in 4500 BC, and was lived in by Romans who built the first fortress walls. There is also a Turkish influence from their tenancy from 1393 until the Russians arrived in 1877.
